What Marbella is like.
Marbella is bigger and more varied than its reputation. The old town is a knot of white streets around the Plaza de los Naranjos, with a long seafront promenade below it. West of the centre the Golden Mile runs to Puerto Banús with the famous hotels and villas, and behind Banús the golf valley of Nueva Andalucía has thousands of apartments and villas around the courses. San Pedro de Alcántara, further west, is a proper town of its own.
East of the centre the feel changes again: Río Real, Los Monteros, Elviria, Las Chapas and Cabopino are quieter, greener and more residential, with pine woods, long beaches and the marina at Cabopino. Marbella has the coast's international schools and private hospitals, and the choice of homes runs from a studio to an estate.
Where to look in Marbella
- The old town and centre
Apartments and townhouses in the historic streets and along the promenade. Everything on foot.
- The Golden Mile
Between the centre and Puerto Banús: the beachfront communities and villas behind them. The top of the market.
- Puerto Banús and Nueva Andalucía
The marina and the golf valley behind it: a huge choice of apartments and villas, many with golf or sea views.
- San Pedro de Alcántara
A town in its own right with a boulevard, a beach and lower prices than Marbella proper.
- East Marbella
Río Real, Los Monteros, Elviria, Las Chapas and Cabopino: quieter, greener and family-friendly, with some of the best beaches.
The practical bits
- Málaga airport
- About forty-five minutes on the motorway.
- Train
- No. Buses along the coast, taxis, and a car for most things.
- Beaches
- Twenty-seven kilometres of them, from Guadalmina to Cabopino.
- Golf
- More than a dozen courses in the municipality, most of them in Nueva Andalucía and towards Benahavís.
- Schools and health
- Several international schools, two private hospitals and the public Costa del Sol hospital.
Who buys here
Everyone, which is the point: families who want the schools, second-home buyers who want the beach and the restaurants, and investors who want a name that lets all year.
